The route of Federal Highway US 12 and Wisconsin State Highway 27 was used by Al Capone in the 1930s and 1940s on his route from Chicago to his summertime hideout in Couderay Wisconsin.  Couderay is not far from the resort area of Hayward Wisconsin.

During the 1940's 1950's and 1960's, senior residents of Augusta Wisconsin would talk excitedly about Al Capone and his gun toting entourage's stops at the Augusta Green Lantern cafe and gas stations as the the gangster passed through
